Genesis 6 verse 5
5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

2 Peter 2 verse 5 and 9
5 if He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; (…)
9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.

About this painting

In Noah’s days, the Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that everyone did what was opposed to His will. Genesis 6 verse 5.
He decided to wipe out the human race He had created, from the face of the earth.
Noah knew of this impending judgment.

In 2 Peter 2 verse 5 Noah is called
‘preacher of righteousness’.
So he warned his contemporaries. In the midst of the iniquity of the people Noah maintained God’s righteousness.

From Ezekiel 33 verse11 we know that God ‘does not delight in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live!’

Matthew 24 verse 37 draws a striking parallel:
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man (Jesus)

Just as the flood was, His coming will be unexpected for many. He then will come to judge the living and the dead.
