When David is 30 years old, he is anointed king over all Israel. 2 Samuel 5.
He defeats the Jebusites and takes Jerusalem. He conquers the fortress of Zion and settles there. In this way Zion becomes the 'City of David'. About 25 years later he will build his palace there. (979 BC).
Now David ‘knows that the LORD has made him king over Israel, and that he has exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.’ 2 Samuel 5 verse 12.
In 2 Samuel 6 we read that David decides to bring the ark of the covenant from Kirjath-Jearim to Jerusalem.
The first attempt to do this fails miserably, because the transport of this sacred object is not done correctly (2 Samuel 6 verses 6 to 11).
The second attempt takes place under the approval of God. David brings the ark - which is now carried by Levites - into Jerusalem with great joy. He dances in front of the ark, an exuberant round dance 'before God'. See verse 21.
The arrival is accompanied by a lot of music and singing. See 1 Chronicles 15 and 16.
In the painting the emphasis is on David's experience of joy, in the presence of God and in the eyes of the common people. See verse 22.
Placing the ark in Jerusalem, the center of government, is an indication that Jerusalem will also become the spiritual center of Israel. Now for the first time God chooses a city from all the tribes of Israel to place His name there. See also Deuteronomy 12 verse 5. Tabernacle and ark were never in a fixed place before.
When Solomon later builds the temple in Jerusalem, and the ark is given a permanent place there, the glory of God fills the temple.
The city of Jerusalem (= City of Peace) is also called the Holy City. Matthew 27 verse 53.
Later, God will show David the right place where He wants to build His temple, namely on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, on Mount Moriah. See also Genesis 22.
The temple is a type or prefiguration of Christ. See also John 2 verses 19 to 22.
God links His Name to the house/dynasty of David; He makes a covenant with David. 2 Samuel 7.
With the establishment of the kingdom of David, He plants the root, from which a Branch will spring, the 'Sprout from the stump of Jesse'. Isaiah 11.
Jeremiah 33 verse 15: 'In those days and in that time I will raise up for David a Branch of righteousness. He will execute justice and righteousness on earth.’
In Revelation 22 verse 16 Christ is called 'the Root and the Offspring of David'.
On the occasion of the arrival of the ark in Jerusalem, David writes a psalm of praise, see 1 Chronicles 16 verses 8 to 36.
