About this painting

After the flood, Noah, his family and the animals leave the Ark. Noah builds an altar and brings an offering of ‘clean’ animals to God. God then blesses Noah and his sons and makes a covenant with them. The sign of the covenant is the ‘bow in the clouds’- the rainbow. Genesis 8 tells us this took place on Mount Ararat. At the centre of the picture, the altar is depicted with a lamb upon it. The sacrificed lamb reminds us of Jesus, the ‘Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) Just like the Ark rescued Noah from judgement, those who believe in Jesus will be saved from judgement. The Ark is a symbol of salvation.
