John 5:8
Then Jesus said to him: “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk".Full bible text
3 In these lay a multitude of invalids - blind, lame, and paralyzed.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, He said to him: "Do you want to be healed?"
7 The sick man answered Him: "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me".
8 Jesus said to him: "Get up, take up your bed, and walk".
About this painting
In John 5 we read the story about a man who has been sick in bed for 38 years.
It is located in one of the colonnades by the bathwater 'Bethesda' at the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem. Along with many other sick, blind, crippled and paralyzed people.
From time to time an angel descends into the bath water and stirs the water. Whoever gets into the water first will be healthy.
Jesus sees the sick man lying there and asks him if he wants to get well. The sick man tells Jesus that he has no one to throw him into the bathwater. Jesus says to the man:
"Get up, pick your mat and walk".
Immediately the man gets well, picks his mat and starts walking.
