30 When He was at the table with them, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.

About this painting

After He is risen from the dead, Jesus appears a number of times to His disciples.
Two men, on their way to Emmaus, a little town 11 km. from Jerusalem, are still not certain about what happened to Jesus after His crucifixion and death. They discuss the latest events.
Then Jesus joins them in their talks, but ‘they were kept from recognizing Him’.
Jesus then explains:
Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter His glory? And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.

As they approach the village, Jesus accepts their invitation to stay with them. When they have supper, He takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it and begins to give it to them.
Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight.
In that moment they realized He was risen indeed!
