About this painting

The psalmist expresses his deep longing for God.
The comparison with the thirsting deer makes clear that the interaction with God is a basic requirement for life to him. Apparently, the psalmist finds himself in troublesome circumstances, in which the help of God would be vital, but is not present.

However, the following verses show that his doubt, due to the situation, cannot overpower his enduring faith in God.

The painting depicts a deer bleating for water in the dry hills of the northern part of Israel.
