Psalm 121

Psalms 121:1-3

A song of ascents.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber.

About this painting

This song is one of a series of ‘songs of ascent’, or pilgrim songs.
These songs were probably sung while traveling to Jerusalem, the temple city. The way to Jerusalem led upwards.
On the way many dangers lurked; gangs that hid in the mountains, uneven paths one could easily stumble on, etc.
While the journey is dangerous and difficult, the psalmist sings about the LORD, who watches over Israel. The Lord accompanies the pilgrim like a bodyguard. He will neither slumber nor sleep, and protects against the dangers that arise in both day and night.
The psalm is also a call to trust in this God, on our own life's journey
