About this painting

Genesis 2:19 "Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. Adam names the animals. Man was created ‘in the image of God’ (Gen.1: 27), with true knowledge of God, righteousness and holiness. This distinguished him from the animals. Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and preserve it. God led the animals to Adam. As Adam would give them names, so their names would be.(vs. 19) On the painting Adam is depicted in his position as image-bearer of God; the crown of creation. The hand on the lion’s head, the ‘king of the animals’, symbolizes this. Adam’s dominion is also expressed by the gesture of his right hand in the centre of the painting. Paradise was characterized by peace (shalom) and harmony between God, man and creation
