Man was created ‘in the image of God’, with true knowledge of God, righteousness and holiness.
Genesis 1 verse 27.
This distinguished him from the animals. Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and preserve it. God led the animals to Adam. As Adam would give them names, so their names would be.
On the painting Adam is depicted in his position as image-bearer of God; the crown of creation. The hand on the lion’s head, the ‘king of the animals’, symbolizes this. Adam’s dominion is also expressed by the gesture of his right hand in the centre of the painting.
Adam names the animals.
