About this painting

Jesus was brought to the hill Golgotha, or Calvary, to be crucified.
He had been convicted innocently.
He Himself did not commit any sin at all; even fulfilled the law of God in a perfect way.

The overwhelming miracle of God’s grace is that Jesus, the Son of God, wanted to bear God’s wrath of sin in our place. Man had sinned and the justice of God demanded sin to be punished to man. That is why Jesus had to become a human being, while remaining God at the same time.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood - to be received by faith.
He did this to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.
Romans 3 verse 23 to 26.

...that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5 verse 19 to 21.

Jesus died a cursed death, to release us from the curse:
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole".
Galatians 3 verse 13. See
Deuteronomy 21 verse 23.

Jesus humiliated Himself to suffer in our place.
Philippians 4 verse 8.

He gave His life voluntarily. John 10 verse 18.
Psalm 40 verse 8 and 9.

He endured rejection, defamation and reproach for our sake.
Isaiah 53 verse 3 to 9.
Psalm 22 verse 1 to 23.
Psalm 69 verse  4, 5 and 21.

Not only was He convicted innocently, He also was insulted, despised, spat at, mocked, beaten, whipped, undressed, nailed to the cross, crushed and forsaken from God.
Isaiah 50 verse 6.
Psalm 88 verse 17 to 20.
Isaiah 52 verse 13, 14 and 15.

Out of love He took our guilt, to save us from death and hell. John 3 verse 16.

When Jesus gave up His spirit in His Father’s hands and died, the (very thick) curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
That curtain had closed the entrance to the Holy of Holies. Only the high priest was allowed to enter that most holy part of the temple once a year, to make atonement for the sin of the people with sacrificial blood.
The perfect sacrifice of Jesus has opened the entrance to the heavenly sanctuary for everyone who repents and believes in Him.
Isaiah  59 verse 2 and 16.
Hebrews 10 verse 19 and 20.
John 14 verse 6.

In the time of Moses, the mediator of the Old Covenant, the bodies of the animals that were sacrificed as a sin offering were burnt outside the camp.
Jesus was crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem as a sin offering for our sin.
Hebrews 13 verse 11 to 16.

He is the Mediator of the New Covenant. In the heavenly sanctuary, in the presence of His Father He pleads for us on the basis of the blood shed by Him.
Hebrews 9 verse 15.

Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1 verse 29.
He was the sacrificial lamb without blemish.
Exodus 12 verse 5.
Genesis 22 verse 8.

From the prophecies quoted above it becomes clear that the atoning death of Jesus has been foretold long in advance. In the rendition of His suffering and death in the four gospels, the expression: ‘that the Scripture might be fulfilled..’ is used frequently.

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,  that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
